Lots of us forget to properly fuel our bodies before exercising. It doesn’t seem like a big deal, but the quality of our workout actually diminishes when we don’t have the proper amounts of energy to burn. We don’t push as hard, we’re unable to go that extra mile, or we fall short of reaching that last set. Well, no more of that! Here’s a list of the foods to eat before your workout that are also super easy to make!
- Fruit smoothie: Blend together some fruit, like bananas and berries, with juice or almond/soy milk. This provides your body with carbs that will fuel your workout. Plus, it won’t weigh you down as it moves quickly through your digestive system.
- Whole wheat toast with egg whites: The whole wheat bread is made up of complex carbohydrates, which taks a longer time to break down, providing you with longer lasting energy. Coupled with protein, this easy meal is sure to give you the boost your need for your workout!
- Whole wheat bread/bagel with honey or natural fruit spread: Again, the whole wheat bread is a slow-release carb that’s good at providing longer lasting energy. Top with honey or fruit spread for their simple carbs. Simple carbs burn quicker, which gives you a quick boost of energy.
- Oatmeal with fruit: The affect is the same as the whole wheat bread/bagel with honey or jam. A mix of complex and simple carbs
- Fruit and greek yogurt or cottage cheese: The benefits here are the simple carbs and protein. I recommend greek yogurt from regular yogurt because it has less sugar and contains more protein.
- Energy bar: You can make energy bars yourself or buy them, as well. Just make sure that you choose ones that are low in sugar and are made with whole food ingredients. Energy bars usually have both simple and complex carbs, as well as protein – all the elements your body needs to maintain a good stamina for workouts.
Make sure to consume food 45-60 minutes before your workout. Working out too soon after eating usually results in stomach cramps and waiting too long after eating might make you hungry again. Happy sweating!
