Obama // Ownership – What is Ownership?

esterday I was sitting in my living room preparing to watch President Obama give his 2nd to last Inaugural Address and the energy and excitement really got me thinking.  My first thought was that it sucks that Obama will have to leave office before long and with all the senseless killings -Roger Owensby Jr., Timothy Thomas, Michael Brown, Tamir Rice, John Crawford, and more-  going on who will stand for the black community. Without Obama as the leader of the free world would our already silenced voices be heard? Fear.  Then I thought well you know Obama doesn’t own that office, he has jus done what it takes to reside there.  With all that Obama has done in his rise and what he will do through the remainder of his term and thereafter he still owns none of the titles given to him beyond there time.

own-er-ship

: the state or fact of owning something

The truth if we can stomach it is that neither Obama or either of us own anything outside of ourselves.  That cushy job you go to 5 days a week, or that multimillion dollar company you created, or the beautiful significant other that lays next to you every night or the big screen tv that you watch when your alone or the car you drove to the store or the house/apt you just drove home too or if we live long enough we will see we don’t even own our children… None of it! As much as we can access those things there is still something that could be done that each one of those things would leave or be taken away from us. It sounds negative but there is freedom in that negativity.  If we remove the concept of ownership we can replace it for gratitude, I mean true appreciation in the understanding that it can all go for a good reason or bad one.

own

: belonging to oneself or itself

The freedom for us lies in the fact that whether Obama is in office or not he still owns all of the qualities within himself that got him into office to begin with.  I say that because we also own all the amazing qualities within ourselves.  The power to be the next president of the U.S. or the president of your home lies inside.  Without the need to own we can allow things to flourish beyond the bonds of what our intentions may have set for them.  Physically, mentally, spiritually we set limits for ourselves based on the things we see around us.  But if I learned anything from the matrix other than a stylish fall back dance move its that even in this digital age the true worth starts and comes from within. Also the realization that the matrix that covers our eyes is the false sense of security that we find in ownership.  Free your mind and heart by freeing ownership of yourself and the things in your life, it’s simply a perspective change.
