Being a man, I could never fully understand what it means to carry a child and to bring a human being into this world. The whole thing is REMARKABLE to me! Not only is Sara a full time mother, she also makes time to share her gifts with the world by helping other mothers stay in shape as she shares with her global audience real life advice on motherhood from her perspective. As a fitness teacher and choreographer, she knows how important it is for mothers to have fun while they work out. We recently caught up with Sara, as she talks about how she got started helping moms around the world.
Please describe your position at your company.
I am a fitness expert with a focus on pre and postnatal exercise. I started my company, The Daily Sweat, in 2012 when I self-produced my first fitness DVD, Expecting More®.
How long have you known you wanted to do what you are currently working on? What made you start your current pursuits?
I didn’t know that that pre and postnatal exercise would become my niche until I became pregnant with my first son, Landon. He was the inspiration for creating Expecting More®. I knew that if I was having a hard time finding fun and active ways to stay fit during my pregnancy, other moms-to-be were too.
Why are you passionate about what you do? What drives you to do what you do?
I’ve been moving all my life. I’m a self-proclaimed dance chick turned fitness chick that decided to build a career and business based on what I found to be most fulfilling, and I wanted to inspire others to make movement part of their lives too. Over time, I have carved my niche within the fitness world as a pre and postnatal fitness expert. I am motivated by my own children and by the desire to stay fit during my pregnancies and beyond. I know what a struggle it is and how important it is to stay motivated and strong during these challenging times in a woman’s life. I hope that by sharing my pre and postnatal journeys I can inspire other women.
Looking back at it now, I would tell my 20-year old self to “stop and smell the roses.”
How did you overcome your own doubts and the doubts of other people?
I refuse to surround myself with people who don’t support my goals and dreams. My husband is my #1 fan; when I doubt myself, he is always there to remind me that I can do whatever I set my mind on accomplishing.
What were some bumps you hit to get where you’re at now?
As much as my children are my main inspiration, they are also my main distraction. The hardest thing for me right now is trying to find balance between being a mom to them and doing what I love. That’s exactly why I created my lifestyle brand WHAT You Love WHO You Love.
What is one thing you did wrong in the past that you can share with people?
One of my mistakes early on in my career is probably a cliché – not living in the moment and appreciating everything I was accomplishing. In my 20s I was constantly in search of “something better.” Like many people, I didn’t realize how good I had it. I was traveling the world working with Reebok and Cirque du Soleil. Looking back at it now, I would tell my 20-year old self to “stop and smell the roses.”
Is there anyone in your profession that you admire and/or model yourself after? What do you like about them?
Yes, I’ve had a lot of mentors over the years – mostly women with children who continue to go after their dreams and aren’t afraid of failing. Those are the people I respect and look up to the most because that is how I would like for others to perceive me and the work I do.
How do you continue to perfect your craft?
I continue to regularly educate myself on the trends and research within the fitness world, attend workshops and other classes, but most importantly I try to connect with other moms. There is always something new to learn and someone new to learn from. The best teachers are the best students.
continue to educate yourself, perfect your craft and then build your brand around that niche.
What’s some advice you can share for anyone who wants to pursuit what you are doing?
I advise anyone that is trying to follow in my footsteps to find their niche. And continue to educate yourself, perfect your craft and then build your brand around that niche.
Is having a website important for you? If so, how has it helped you grow?
A website is absolutely necessary – no matter what business you’re building. For me, it was especially important since I have built e-commerce into my brand, which has really allowed me to reach markets and demographics I never imagined! I have fans around the world that engage with me on social media and purchase my DVDs and downloadable workouts on a regular basis. Without a website, they wouldn’t be able to access my products.
How can people keep up with all the new things you’re doing?
As a mom of two boys and a new fitness DVD coming out on Mother’s Day, the best place to keep up with me is on social media. Follow me at on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and YouTube.
