Seattle Seahawks vs. New England Patriots
T
he parallels between these teams and what’s going on in society today are un-canning. There is an epic battle of old ideals and new energy sweeping the country from East to West coast. The New England Patriots ride on the ideals that have carried the United States since its birth and allowed us to grow into a country that has been labeled the “Leaders of the Free World”. The Seattle Seahawks all the way on the other coast represent a new way of existence that flourishes on bold progressive energy and although exciting has not yet shown longevity and stability. With this Super Bowl we have the opportunity to see the transition that is presently upon us in our country played out on the field of juggernauts in head to head battle. If the Seahawks repeat they will put away the underdog mentality and show that individuality can excel collectively and if the Patriots win they will add to their legacy of structural and orderly success.
The Patriots represent the past to current model of structure in America. They are the closest thing to a corporation that you will see on a football field. Bill Belichick as the CEO embodies the stereotype of old money. Solid, stern, decisive, sharp, consistent, and well-learned. Without any research into his true personal character he looks like what many call, “white privilege”. (White privilege- the extra freedom that some Caucasian males get in society because they are Caucasian and male. Ex. Not followed around stores like minorities, automatically assumed credible when speaking in front of groups, etc.
This is not to bring a negative connotation to Bill Belichcik or the Patriots because first off this is only an analogy and secondly many to most white males weren’t apart of creating white privilege they just accept the benefits of entitlement that come with it. His President Tom Brady is very talented and well groomed as the successor to the CEO. His youthfulness allows him to be the face of the company and the expertise he applies to himself and that were passed down put him in a position to consistently be successful. What better example of corporation like action than than the current “deflated footballs” scandal the Patriots are dealing with? Like most big corporations Bill Belichick stood up on tv and basically said, yea it happened but I don’t know who, how, when, what, or why. We all have one way or another had a problem with a corporation and didn’t address it for fear of getting caught in the red tape or tightened our belts and took it to the man only to realize that he would just pay his way through and get away with it anyway. I’m not actually accusing the Patriots of anything but fining a machine made of money doesn’t really do anything, it’ll just make more money. Season after season big corporations are in a position for victory because they have consistent access to the tools needed to succeed and as the Patriots have shown this doesn’t guarantee victory every year but it does equate to a high level of consistency in success.
On the other side of the field you have the Seattle Seahawks who represent the new evolved model of structure in society.
Seattle being one of if not the most progressive cities in the country has a package of players that encourage individuality on both sides of the ball as opposed to just blending in as an effective working components like the past to current model. Think about it how many people do you hear from on the Patriots? The CEO and the President. Versus the Seahawks where Richard Sherman, a defensive cornerback (which is not a position usually chosen to represent defense leadership) is one of the most prominent players presented in media. Also Marshawn Lynch an outstanding running back whose personality is one that most likely wouldn’t be accepted in the Patriot locker room, proven by there release of wide receiver Randy Moss in 2010 whose attitude caused him to constantly be in confrontation with coaching staff and team mates. Seattle Seahawk quarterback Russell Wilson, who is well below the typical height of a NFL quarterback has destroyed stereotypical images of what a quarterback should be. He can sit in the pocket, he can run, he is accurate, his demeanor doesn’t exude that which is usually portrayed in ethnic players and yet his success is undeniable. Going back to the city of Seattle which has input the initiative to raise minimum wage to $15 becoming the highest in the country. On top of that they have created a 4.8 billion dollar budget which devotes close to $1 million dollars to services for the homeless. Seattle just like it’s team has found a way to connect with the individuality and uniqueness of each member of its city through creative and progressive means. And we can’t forget coach Pete Carroll whose ability to connect with new, youthful, progressive energy has allowed him to not only stay youthful in appearance and aura but to have success on the collegiate and national level which is an accomplishment not many have achieved. Pete Carroll and the city of Seattle have made renaissance in many areas that the founding fathers in New England have chosen to disregard.
Although the Seahawks won the championship last year, that does not guarantee victory. The old model has proven success in some areas and that’s why it is still in place. For the first time in years I personally believe that there are equally dominant forces on the field and we will see what energy survives after the battle. No matter what the belief is about the Patriots deflated football scandal the situation can sort of stay under the radar for now because they have a proven track record of success. On the flip side no matter what other teams think about Richard Sherman’s trash-talk he has backed it up this far with a team that can back him up. So place your bets and get on your greatest Go! Fight! Win! cheerleading outfits because this one will be a nail biter.
