People like to think of modeling and fashion as a very glamorous industry of beautiful women, luxury and business where dreams come true. But the reality is a lot deeper than this. Not many models are talking about the flaws of the industry and people have no idea what models(young girls) are actually going through while growing up in this very tough business.

I have realize that not many people realize how this industry is affecting women in it and also just women all around the world. This industry is so messed up, but still one of the most powerful business to brainwash so many women all around the world.

The topic we can not stop talking about…. The Body Image Issues.

Even now when fashion world have taken some great steps moving forward with promoting healthy body image, there are still many issues to work with.

At first how industry is pressuring models to have certain type of body. If you don’t know then models are measured weekly or monthly to make sure they are in perfect shape. But we can’t forget that most models start when they are teenagers. And every single woman in the world knows very well what kind of changes your body is going through from being 15-25 years old. These are the years when young girls are becoming a woman and their bodies are going though changes. And nothing can stop it. The pressure of being in the same “ideal” shape all the time, while by nature your body is going through changes is mentally a heavy package on a young girls shoulders. Way too many times I have heard girls saying things like they can’t workout because they are scared to get bulky, or they actually eat so little just to keep these measurement numbers on point. Many of these girls don’t realize that their health is actually a lot more important than making it in modeling business.

The thing about fashion, high fashion in particular, is that people take it very seriously. If a model shows up at a job and cannot fit into the clothes, it’s shameful. That is what was hardest for me. I was treated like a failure for not fitting into some clothes. I know some girls resorted to drug use. I was an exercise fanatic and cigarette smoker. I would go to the gym and couldn’t eat for like ten days. I saw an editor from Harper’s Bazaar and he told me I looked fabulous. I remember thinking, ‘Wow, that’s what I have to do to make it?’ It’s very sad.” – Kate Dillion

While clothing lines are promoting their products on teenage girls who are flat chested sample size. The percentage of women in the world who actually have that type of body is very low. Most high fashion brands are expensive and women who can actually afford it to themselves are 20+ years old. Most 20+ grown women have curves. And average size of the real women is called “plus size” in the fashion industry. So why is fashion industry marketing their clothes to 20+ years, while promoting their products on a lot younger girls? This sends a wrong message to women who are actually the potential clients. People forget that these models in campaigns are often still kids. Every woman wants to look good and they all pay attention what they wear. So why to keep modeling industry in size 0? They keep on saying that clothes look better on skinny girls, but is it really true?

Actually we are very lucky to see plus size modeling being a very growing market. But it’s still not where it supposed to. I feel it is my duty to promote healthy body image in fashion industry. I used to be that flat chested sample size, but becoming a woman in this industry have taught me how to appreciate my curves.

When few months ago Calvin Klein unveiled their new campaign with size 10 models, I was so happy. As a nutritionist and healthy lifestyle advocate I find it so important to promote healthy body image in fashion industry. And to see iconic brands like Calvin Klein making major changes like this… just makes my heart scream of happiness.

There is no wrong or right type of body, all bodies are beautiful if they are well taken care of. You just need healthy habits and confidence. But sadly fashion industry often sends out a very different message. Few weeks ago there was a huge mess around Victoria’s Secret latest Bra campaign talking about the perfect body. Like there can be just one type of body.

Women are so easily influenced by what they see in the magazines. For some reason society thinks they should look like this. Younger girls want to be like that. Women in they 35+ start to feel pressure to keep on looking like these girls in their twenties. This industry have build up a illusion, what isn’t real. The girls in the magazines don’t even look like the girls in the magazines. I want to call you all out to stop being inspired by what you see in media. Fashion industry wants to feed you with the illusions, but in reality you are already pretty much ideal version of yourself and you should not feel any kind of pressure to change yourself to something you are not.

There is so much unnecessary pressure on women out there and young girls in the industry to be certain type of perfect. People want to forget what is really important…. You! You should not want to change yourself. But simply give the best to be completely you. It is so much easier to be ideal for yourself than you can imagine. You don’t need to workout like a Victoria’s secret angel ( but why not to do it, nothing better than being active and fit) and you don’t need to starve yourself to reach certain type of body. You just have to love yourself the way you are. I am so tired of seeing women comparing themselves to the women next to them or the women in media.

When nowadays straight size models who are mostly used in worldwide magazines, campaigns, catalogues, lookbooks and commercial are size 0-2, then 20 years ago average models were size 4-6.

These body image issues for models and any women in the world is the main cause of insecurities and lack of confidence. It’s easy to say

be confident!”
but a lot harder to achieve when you feel such a pressure from society to look in certain way. But it’s hard to be confident when you are constantly judged by the society and the woman sitting next to you(yeah she is probably judging you while she is comparing herself with you). How have we got here and how we can stop it?

Fashion industry have still long way to go till we can get to the point when any kind of body type is promoted as the ideal and women should not feel pressure to look certain way.

But most of all women need to start working on themselves, focus on their own values and not let media manipulate their own truth.
